Nine thousand years outdoors will do something to anybody’s skin. The eighth night is about what happened next.
Go back to the second night for a moment.
Parvati stood in a forest for nine thousand years. Three thousand on fallen leaves, three thousand on water, and a thousand on nothing at all, through heat, through monsoon, through cold, without moving.
Nobody comes out of that unmarked. The tellings say the dust and the sun and the years had darkened her skin almost past recognising.
She had won. Shiva had come. And she was standing there covered in nine thousand years of weather.
The rest of this story, read aloud, and a new one every day.
