Privacy Policy

Last updated 12 September 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Setu Inc. ("Setu," "we," "us," or "our"), a corporation incorporated in Canada, collects, uses, discloses, and protects personal information when you use the Setu mobile application (the "App").

By creating an account or using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the App.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only what we need to operate the App.

Account information you provide directly:

Usage and behavioral information (collected automatically):

How you interact with the App — which stories you view, engagement duration, navigation patterns, and general in-app activity, collected through our analytics provider, PostHog, to understand usage patterns and improve the App.

What we do not collect:

We do not collect your precise or approximate location.

We do not collect payment information at this time (see Section 8).

Setu is built around personal spiritual experience — the stories you spend time with, the practices you return to, the moments you pause to reflect. We understand this is intimate, and we treat how you engage with the App with particular care.

Because the way you use Setu could, in some cases, reflect something about your personal beliefs or inner life, we hold ourselves to the following:

• We never sell this information, share it for advertising, or use it to build a profile of your beliefs.

• We do not ask you to declare your faith, tradition, or beliefs in order to use the App.

• We use engagement information only to understand how the App is used and to improve it. This analytics data is processed on EU-based infrastructure and is stripped of identifying details such as your IP address.

• In reflective features where you might indicate how you are feeling, we deliberately record only that the feature was used — not the specific feeling you chose.

Where applicable law treats information that may reveal personal beliefs as a special or sensitive category — for example, under the EU GDPR or certain U.S. state privacy laws — we handle such information in accordance with those requirements and rely on your consent or another lawful basis where required.

2. How We Use Your Information

We do not sell your personal information to third parties, and we do not use your data to serve third-party advertising.

3. Legal Basis for Processing (EU/EEA/UK users)

4. Who We Share Information With

We share personal information only with service providers who help us operate the App ("sub-processors"), under agreements requiring them to protect your data:

We do not share your personal information with any other third party for their own independent purposes, and we do not sell personal information.

5. International Data Transfers

Your data is stored on servers located in Canada (AWS ca-central-1 region) and, for analytics, on PostHog's EU-based infrastructure (PostHog EU Cloud).

Canada has been recognized by the European Commission as providing an adequate level of data protection for commercial organizations subject to Canadian federal privacy law (PIPEDA). Transfers of personal information from the EU/EEA to Setu in Canada therefore require no additional safeguards.

By routing all analytics through PostHog's EU Cloud rather than a US-hosted instance, we avoid the need for Standard Contractual Clauses for this data category. EU hosting does not restrict which countries may use the App — users anywhere in the world may use Setu, and their data is simply processed on EU-based infrastructure by this provider.

6. Data Retention

We retain your personal information (name, email, and usage data) for as long as your account is active.

If you deactivate your account, we retain your data for up to 12 months following deactivation. We do this for three specific reasons: to allow you to reactivate your account without loss of data, to help prevent fraud and abuse, and to meet potential legal or accounting obligations. After this period, your personal information is permanently deleted from our active systems, except where retention is required by law.

If you request deletion of your account and data (rather than simple deactivation) by contacting support@setu-app.com, we will delete your personal information from our systems within a reasonable time, subject to residual copies in backups purged on our standard backup cycle, and any data we are legally required to retain.

7. Your Privacy Rights

EU/EEA/UK (GDPR):

Certain U.S. states (CCPA/CPRA and similar):

Right to opt out of sale/sharing — note: we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising

Canada (PIPEDA):

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@setu-app.com. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.

8. Future Paid Features

We do not currently charge for any features of the App. We plan to introduce paid subscription tiers in the future. This Privacy Policy will be updated before any payment processing begins, describing how payment information is collected and by whom (e.g., a third-party payment processor). Continued use of the App after such an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

9. Push Notifications

With your permission, the App may send push notifications (e.g., new content alerts, account notices). You can disable these at any time through your device's operating system settings. Notifications are delivered via Apple's Push Notification service (APNs) and/or Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM).

10. Age Requirement and Children's Privacy

The App is intended for a broad, general audience of cultural and family storytelling readers, including adults and families reading together. Users must be at least 13 years old to create an account. At sign-up, you are required to affirmatively confirm — via a dedicated checkbox reading "I confirm that I am 13 years of age or older" — that you meet this age requirement before an account can be created. Providing your date of birth is optional.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The App is not marketed or positioned as a children's product. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact support@setu-app.com and we will take steps to delete such information.

11. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App or by email before they take effect. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

13. Governing Law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of Canada and the province in which Setu Inc. is registered, without regard to conflict of law principles, except where local mandatory data protection law (such as GDPR for EU/EEA users) requires otherwise.
