The Great Epics
She banked the two boons for years without naming them. Then Rama’s consecration was announced.
Everyone remembers what she asked for. Almost nobody remembers what she was owed.
Dasharatha went to war on Indra's side against the asura Sambara, and it went badly. The king was wounded, and the chariot he was fighting from was in danger.
And the person driving it was his queen. Kaikeyi had gone to that war with him. Which is itself worth pausing on.
She got the chariot and the wounded king out.
He offered her two boons in return, unspecified, redeemable whenever she chose. She did not name them. She banked them. And they sat unclaimed for years, while she raised Bharata.
By the Ramayana's own account she was the wife Dasharatha loved best. And Rama's favourite among his father's queens.
There is a further detail the later tradition adds.
