The Great Epics
He knew who the brahmin at his door really was, and he knew what the man had come for. So he named his price before he gave anything up.
Karna was born wearing armour, and he was born wearing earrings.
They came from his father, Surya, and they were part of his body, not gear he was handed. The text says they were made of amrita and says no more.
Most retellings skip this.
They did not make Karna unbeatable.
What they did was smaller. Because they were made of amrita, Karna could not be killed. His death in battle was not possible while he wore them.
Everything short of that could still happen. He could be beaten, disarmed, made to give in. He could run. And he still felt pain, because the armour did not spare him that.
