The Great Epics
Arjuna, who had defeated kings and warriors across the earth, was once killed by his own son. The person who brought him back was a Naga princess.
She married Arjuna, bore a son the Tamil country still worships, and forty years later arranged for another of his sons to kill him.
The five brothers shared Draupadi, under an arrangement with a rule attached.
Each had a year alone with her. And the others were not to intrude.
Arjuna broke it. He entered a room to fetch his weapons, because a brahmin's cattle were being stolen and he could not help without them.
He chose to help. And then he imposed the penalty on himself anyway. Twelve years of exile.
And he refused to be talked out of it by anyone. Including Yudhishthira, who pointed out that the rule had been made to protect the brothers. And that no brother was complaining.
He went. And the twelve years are where the strangest branches of his family come from.
