Both governments of his country want him to say which of them is right, and both will exile him when he does not.

He was exiled by both sides.

North Vietnam would not have him. And South Vietnam would not have him.

For the same reason. He would not say which of them was right.

It lasted thirty-nine years.

Where he started

Thich Nhat Hanh was born Nguyễn Xuân Bảo on the 11th of October, 1926, at Huế in central Vietnam. He entered monastic training at sixteen, at the Từ Hiếu temple, and was ordained in 1951.

Then his country spent thirty years being fought over.
