The Woman Who Told the Gods Who Had Really Won

The gods once needed a woman to explain to them who had really won their war, and centuries later, one Bengali king's dream would get all the credit for a worship that was already carved into temple stone before he was born.

Long before any king built a shrine, the gods needed a lesson. This is where the story of Jagaddhatri really starts.

The Kena Upanishad tells it first. The gods had just won a great battle. Pride swelled in them fast. They forgot who had given them the win. So Brahman, the ground of all things, chose to test them. It took the form of an odd spirit, a yaksha, and stood in an open field.
