The Tribe That Says Hanuman Still Visits Every Forty-One Years

There is a book in a cave in the Sri Lankan mountains, and it is not finished.

There is a book in a cave in the Sri Lankan mountains, and it is not finished.

In it are written the words a god is believed to have spoken on his visits. Generations have added to it. Nobody has closed it, because he is expected again.

Who keeps it

The Mathang live deep in the forested Piduru range in central Sri Lanka, in relative isolation, around a place called the Hanuman Bodhi sanctuary.

They trace their descent from Vibhishana.

That name matters here. Vibhishana was Ravana's own brother, and in the war he broke with his house and went across to Rama rather than keep backing a brother who would not give Sita back.

So the Mathang hold Hanuman as one of their chief guardians, and they connect it directly to what their ancestor did. The loyalty is not something they chose. It is something they inherited.
