Three demon brothers built three flying cities and believed nothing could reach them there. They had not accounted for a single arrow, aimed by the one god their arrogance had provoked.
According to the tradition recorded across the Shiva Purana and Skanda Purana, three demon brothers rose to great power. Some tellings name them Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana, sons of the demon Tarakasura. Through long penance, they won a boon. It let them build three great cities, known together as Tripura. One was gold, one was silver, and one was iron. The cities could fly through the sky and merge into a single fortress at certain times.
They believed themselves protected by this near-unbeatable design. The three brothers used their power to conquer heaven, earth, and the world beneath. Their reign spread terror and disorder wherever it reached. The gods could not break through defences built for this exact kind of attack.
