Every time an arrow struck true, the enemy simply grew another head. The real fight was never going to be won by hitting what everyone could already see.
Ravana, the ten-headed king of Lanka, had abducted Sita, Rama's wife, and carried her across the sea to his island kingdom. Rama, alongside his brother Lakshmana, set out to win her back. He gathered an army of vanaras, forest-dwelling allies led by Sugreeva and Hanuman. Together they built a bridge of stone across the ocean to reach Lanka itself.
The war that followed, described across the Yuddha Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, was long and fierce. Ravana commanded vast forces and formidable warriors, including his own brothers and sons. Many battles were fought before Rama and Ravana finally faced one another directly.
