True Valor

The Temple That Wrote Down Everyone's Name

A thousand years ago, a king had the names of hundreds of dancers, musicians and workers carved into the walls of his greatest temple. They are still there.

A thousand years ago a king in the south built the tallest temple in India. His name was Rajaraja Chola. The temple stands at Thanjavur, in Tamil Nadu. He finished it around 1010 CE.

Most kings who build great temples leave us stone and little else. We can walk in and admire the work. We cannot hear the people who did it. Rajaraja did something else. He had the temple's own records cut into its walls.
