The Great Epics

The Squirrel and the Bridge

While mighty monkeys hurled boulders to build the bridge to Lanka, a tiny squirrel carried grains of sand. The warriors laughed, until Rama stopped them.

The mightiest army in the world was building a road across an ocean, and a squirrel was helping.

The scene

The bridge to Lanka was being built, and it was the largest thing anyone had tried.

Vanaras came down out of the forest carrying whole trees. Boulders that took several of them together were dragged to the shore and heaved into the water. Nala, son of the builder of the gods, worked at the head of the bridge, laying what came. The line of it crept out across open sea.

It was loud, huge, and all a matter of size.

They used the largest things to hand. Moved by the strongest creatures available. As fast as they could be moved.
