The Spring That Warns Before the Storm

The water goes black before something bad happens. People do not say that as old folklore. They say it about 1990.

The water goes black before something bad happens.

People do not say that in Kashmir as a piece of old folklore, told at a comfortable distance. They say it about 1990.

The spring, not the building

The temple at Tulla Mulla, a short way from Srinagar, is built directly over a natural spring, ringed by chinar trees said to be centuries old.

The building itself is small, a modest marble shrine standing in the middle of the spring's own hexagonal pool.

That is deliberate. Nobody has come to see an image in a sanctum. They have come to see the water.

Most of the time it runs clear, or a faint milky white.

But it does not hold one colour. It shifts. Pink. Light green. Blue. Sometimes a red that unsettles even regular visitors, people who have watched it cycle through its gentler shades for years, and who know without being told which colours belong to an ordinary visit and which do not.
