The Song That Was Not Sung for a King

The greatest singer at Akbar's court said there was someone better: his teacher, who would not sing for any king.

This is a legend. Musicians have told it for four hundred years and no court record backs it up. It survives because of what it says about music, not because of what it proves about history.

It is about the difference between music made for applause and music made as prayer.
