The Song That Wandered, and the Wife Who Went Looking

A singer's mind drifted for a moment during a royal performance, and a king's fury turned him into a monster. It took his wife travelling to the ends of her search to bring him back.

King Pundarika ruled a kingdom. Among his people was a gandharva named Lalit, gifted with a beautiful singing voice, and his wife Lalita, devoted to him completely. Lalit served at the royal court, called upon often to sing during its many gatherings.

At one such gathering, King Pundarika called upon Lalit to sing before the assembled court, expecting the same skilled performance he always gave. But Lalit's thoughts that day were elsewhere. His mind was caught up in memories of his wife Lalita, and his singing suffered because of it. A serpent among the gathered listeners noticed this at once, and used it to bring Lalit's failure to the king's attention.
