The Vedas once existed as a single, overwhelming wave of sacred sound. One sage looked at that wave and decided it needed to become four rivers instead.
Before Vyasa was born, his father, the sage Parashara, undertook severe penance directed at Shiva. Shiva was pleased with this devotion. He granted a boon. Parashara's son would become a Brahmarshi, a sage of the highest order. He would be equal in stature to the great sage Vashistha. He would be famous across the world for his knowledge.
Vyasa was born to Parashara and Satyavati on an island in the river Yamuna, near Kalpi. Because of this birthplace, and his dark complexion, he came to be called Krishna Dwaipayana, the dark one born on an island. Tradition holds that from the moment of his birth, he already carried the knowledge of the Vedas, the Dharmashastras, and the Upanishads within him. He needed no teacher to instil it.
