The Great Epics
Kamban would not let Ravana lay a hand on Sita. So he had him lift the entire hermitage instead, with the ground she stood on.
There is a moment in the Tamil Ramayana that tells you everything about the poet.
Ravana comes to carry Sita away. In Valmiki, he takes hold of her and lifts her into the chariot.
So in his telling, Ravana digs out the ground beneath the hermitage. And he carries away the whole hut, with the earth under it.
So that he never touches her at any point.
He did not omit the abduction. He engineered around it.
He had decided that this particular hand should never be laid on this particular woman. And he had the authority to arrange the physics accordingly.
The rest of this story, read aloud, and a new one every day.
