The Great Arguments

The Philosopher Who Was Built After He Died

For a man said to have toured India demolishing every rival school, the silence of those schools is hard to explain.

The most famous philosopher India produced may have been almost unknown while he was alive.

That is the finding modern scholarship keeps arriving at, and it is not a small adjustment. It is the difference between a man who conquered the subcontinent with argument and a provincial teacher whose reputation was built for him six hundred years after he died.

Both of those are called Adi Shankara. It is worth being able to tell them apart.

What the philosophy actually says

Start here, because this part is not in doubt and it is the reason anybody cares.

Advaita means not two.

The claim is that there is one reality, Brahman, and that the self at the centre of you, the atman, is not a small piece of it, not a part of it, not something in relationship to it. It is it. Not similar. Identical.

And the world of separate things, including your separate self, is maya: not a lie exactly, and not nothing, but appearance, the way a rope in dim light appears as a snake. The snake is genuinely seen. It causes real fear. And it is not there, and no amount of examining the snake will help, because what is needed is to see the rope.
