The Night the Prison Gates Opened Themselves

A king had murdered six newborns to escape a prophecy. The seventh he could not touch, and the eighth walked out of his own dungeon while every guard slept.

In Mathura, Kansa had imprisoned his own father, Ugrasena, and seized the throne for himself. He ruled with cruelty and growing fear. When his sister Devaki married Vasudeva of the Yadava clan, a divine voice spoke from the sky during the wedding celebrations. It warned Kansa directly. The eighth child born to Devaki would be the one to end his reign, and his life.

Terrified by this prophecy, Kansa moved at once. He imprisoned both Devaki and Vasudeva. As each of their children was born, one after another, he had the infant killed before the prophecy could come true. Six children were lost this way. The tyrant's fear overrode any pity or hesitation that might otherwise have stopped him.
