True Valor
Zinc turns to vapour at a lower temperature than it takes to free it from its ore. India solved that problem six hundred years before Europe.
Most metals are obtained the same way. Heat the ore with charcoal, the oxygen goes to the carbon, the metal is left, and it melts and runs out.
Zinc will not do this, and the reason is a genuinely nasty piece of physics.
To free zinc from its ore you need a temperature above about 1000 degrees.
Zinc boils at 907.
So the moment the reaction gives you metallic zinc, you are already past its boiling point.
And it is not a liquid, pooling in the bottom of your furnace. It is a vapour. Rising. In a furnace full of hot air.
And zinc vapour meeting air instantly re-oxidises. It turns straight back into a white powder and floats away.
