Rama was leaving, and offered him anything he wanted. He asked for more work.
Rama was leaving.
His reign at Ayodhya had run its course. He was ready to put the body down and go back to Vaikuntha, and before he went he turned to Hanuman and offered him a boon.
Anything he wanted. For everything he had done.
Hanuman had one request, and it is not the one anybody expects.
He asked to stay alive.
Not to be spared anything. Not to be comfortable. He asked to go on existing for as long as Rama's story was still being told among people who loved it.
He was not asking to escape an ending. He was asking that his service not have one.
