The Goddess With Three Different Beginnings

Ask three different families in Telangana why Bathukamma is kept, and you may get three different answers, a goddess waking from battle-weary sleep, a princess born to grieving parents, or a wife who never returned from her father's fire.

Bathukamma is one of the few big festivals here with no single, agreed start story. Several different legends circulate across Telangana. Each one offers its own account of why the day is kept. None of them holds a clear, fixed place in an approved primary text. This is worth stating plainly, not smoothed over. The honest picture here is a beloved folk tradition, carrying several competing stories, not one settled account.

One widely told version connects Bathukamma directly to Goddess Gauri's defeat of the demon Mahishasura. The fierce battle ended his reign of terror. Tradition holds that Gauri then fell into a deep sleep from sheer tiredness, resting on Aswayuja Padyami. Devotees grew worried by her stillness. They prayed hard for her to wake, and she finally did, on Dasami, the tenth day. This version ties Bathukamma to the same wider myth that shapes Durga Puja and Navratri elsewhere. But the detail of her tired sleep, and the prayers that woke her, belongs to Telangana's own regional telling. It is not part of any approved Puranic account of the battle itself.
