The God Who Insisted on Being Seen

A king searched his whole kingdom for a god he could look upon with his own eyes. What he found instead was a wooden secret nobody was allowed to watch being made.

Long ago, King Indradyumna ruled the kingdom of Avanti. He wanted something most kings never ask for. He did not want wealth or conquest. He wanted darshan, the chance to stand before a true form of Vishnu, and see it with his own eyes. He sent his men across the land searching for such a form.

Word reached him of a deity worshipped deep in a forest near the eastern sea. A local tribal chief cared for it. This deity was called Nila Madhava, the blue one, carved from a rare blue stone. Indradyumna sent a Brahmin envoy named Vidyapati to find it. Vidyapati searched long and hard. In time, he found the forest and the deity the tribal chief guarded so closely.
