There was a quarrel in Vaikuntha, and Lakshmi walked out.
Vishnu came down after her.
He took the form of Srinivasa and settled in the Tirumala hills, and there he met a princess called Padmavati, who was Lakshmi herself, born on earth, separated from him by the same argument that had scattered them both out of heaven.
He wanted to marry her.
And he could not afford to.
He had come down stripped of his celestial wealth. A wedding of that kind costs a great deal, and the god standing on that hillside did not have it.
So he went to Kubera, who is the god of wealth, and asked to borrow.
