A dutiful son learns his good, devoted father is suffering after death for a wrong he never even knew he had done. The son cannot undo the wrong himself, but he can fast on his father's behalf.
King Indrasena ruled his kingdom with justice and devotion, honouring the gods and caring for his people with real diligence. Even so, a shadow hung over his household that he did not yet understand. His own father, King Indradyumna, had passed from this world some time before. Indrasena had no reason to think anything was wrong.
One day, the sage Narada arrived at Indrasena's court. He often carried news like this, moving between the worlds of gods and mortals. What Narada brought this time was troubling. He told Indrasena that his father, Indradyumna, was suffering in Yamaloka, the realm of the dead. He could not find peace there.
