One wedding on this day is confirmed in scripture. Several others are widely believed to share the date too, though at least one of them is dated elsewhere in the tradition to a completely different month.
The demon Tarakasura had spread terror across the three worlds. He had won a boon from Brahma, and the boon said that only a son of Shiva could kill him. Tarakasura took that to mean he could not be beaten. Shiva, at the time, had no interest in marrying or in having a son.
So Shiva and Parvati came together. Murugan was born to meet the one condition that could end Tarakasura. Parvati armed her son herself, with the Vel, a spear forged from her own shakti. Murugan took command of the armies gathered against the demon.
