The Great Epics

The Counsellor a King Agreed With and Ignored

He warned Yudhishthira about the house of lac in a language the bystanders could not follow: build your dwelling like a jackal’s, with many outlets.

He was the son of a servant woman, he was never going to be king, and he was right about it all.

Where he came from

The Kuru line failed for want of heirs.

And Satyavati called her firstborn son Vyasa, to father children on the widowed queens.

Ambika shut her eyes when he came, and her son Dhritarashtra was born blind. Ambalika went pale, and her son Pandu was born pale. Sent a third time, Ambika sent a maid in her own place.

And the maid took Vyasa in without flinching. Her son was born whole in body and mind. And he was named Vidura.

He was therefore the one son of that generation with no defect and no throne. The blind man became king. The pale one became king. The sound one became counsellor, because his mother had been a servant.
