The Boy Who Made Ravana Set Down His Own Invincibility

A boy on the road at Gokarna offered to hold something for a moment, and the whole balance of the three worlds turned on it.

What Ravana had won

Ravana's devotion to Shiva was not a pose. It was years of severe penance, sustained, and it was aimed at one thing.

The Atmalinga.

Not a lingam that represents Shiva. A lingam carrying Shiva's own energy directly.

Nothing else in the tradition had ever been given away like that, and Ravana asked for it, and Shiva - genuinely moved - said yes.

Understand who is asking. This is the same ascetic discipline that later made him formidable enough to take on Rama in the Ramayana, where he is the antagonist and where most people meet him. That discipline had already bought him something considerably more dangerous first.
