The Great Epics
He came down the slope towards Rama’s search party intending to eat them. Then he heard his brother’s name.
The search for Sita was saved by a bird who could not fly, who came down the mountain intending to eat the search party.
Sampati and Jatayu were the sons of Aruna, the charioteer of the sun, and they were young, and they were vain about their flying.
So they went up. Not to a height, at the sun. It was a contest, the kind young strong creatures set themselves, and they climbed until the air thinned and the heat became something that could kill.
Jatayu, the younger, began to fail first.
Sampati spread his wings over his brother and took the sun on his own back.
The wings burned off him. He fell, not gently, and not near anywhere, and came down on the Vindhya mountain, ruined, alive, and grounded. Jatayu lived, and drifted away somewhere else, and the brothers did not meet again.
