Where one Jain community reads a single unfolding story across eight days, another spends ten days asking the very same question, over and over: what does this virtue actually ask of me?
Das Lakshana Parva is the Digambara Jain community's own form of a wider practice. It is kept during Chaturmas, the four months of the rains. By long custom, monks and nuns stayed in one place through this season. That way they did not harm the small creatures that fill the wet ground.
The Svetambara tradition keeps this period as the eight-day Paryushana, built around the Kalpa Sutra. The Digambara tradition keeps a related but distinct ten-day form instead. It is built on another text, and a whole other daily order.
The rest of this story, read aloud, and a new one every day.
