The Great Epics

Sulochana and the Head of Indrajit

Ravana's son dies in battle. His wife remains behind to live through the meaning of that death.

She is not in the Ramayana. She is in the Ramayanas.

Where she comes from

Sulochana appears nowhere in Valmiki.

The oldest Ramayana has Indrajit. Ravana's eldest son, Meghanada.

He was the most dangerous warrior on either side. He defeated Indra, and took his name from it.

And the oldest Ramayana has his death, at Lakshmana's hands. It does not have a wife for him.

She enters through the later and regional retellings, and her story is not evenly distributed. It is worth saying clearly that she is also absent from Krittivasi's Bengali Ramayana, which is often assumed to carry her. Her fullest development is in the Marathi devotional tradition. There Sati Sulochana became a subject in its own right.

And from there it went into folk performance. And into early Indian cinema, which filmed her more than once in the 1930s.
