His brother went into a cave and did not come out. Blood came out instead. Everything after that followed from what he did in the next few minutes.
Sugriva and Vali were brothers and, by every account of the years before this, close ones. Vali was king of Kishkindha. Sugriva was the brother who served him.
There was no rivalry in place. That matters, because what happened was not an old grudge coming up. It was an accident that made one.
