The Great Epics

Shantanu and the Seven Children

He promised never to ask questions. Then seven children disappeared into the river.

A woman married a king on the condition that he never question her, and then drowned seven of their children while he watched.

The condition

Shantanu, king of Hastinapura, saw a woman on the bank of the Ganga and asked her to marry him.

She agreed, and set terms. He was never to ask who she was, and he was never to question anything she did, however it appeared to him. The moment he did either, she would leave.

He accepted, because he was in love and because the condition sounded like nothing.
