The Great Epics

Sanjaya Sees the War Without Being There

He could see the entire war. The king listening to him could not. The tragedy is that the truth was still not enough.

The blind king was offered the power to see the war. He refused it, and asked that it be given to his driver instead. Then he could hear about it without having to look.

Who he was

Sanjaya was the son of Gavalgana. And he was a suta, of the charioteer class.

He held the same standing as the family that took Karna in. Not a prince, not a brahmin, not a warrior of rank.

He was Dhritarashtra's charioteer, his adviser and, in practice, the person the king trusted most.
