The Great Epics

Right Every Time She Spoke

Her question over her husband’s body is the hardest anyone puts to Rama, and the epic prints it alongside his answer rather than instead of it.

Every man in Kishkindha got it wrong, and the queen got it right twice, and nobody listened either time.

The first time

Vali was the king of the vanaras. The strongest being in the epic short of Ravana himself.

He had beaten Ravana in a fight, and carried him around under his arm. Sugriva was his younger brother. Tara was Vali's queen, and the daughter of the physician Sushena.

The trouble began underground. Vali went into a cave after the asura Mayavi and told Sugriva to wait at the mouth. After a long time blood came out of the cave, and the sounds stopped. Sugriva concluded his brother was dead.

He sealed the entrance with a boulder, so the asura could not follow. He went home. And he was made king, because the throne could not stay empty.

Vali came out. And read it as a coup.

He drove Sugriva out, and took his kingdom back.
