The Great Epics
The ocean was impossible to cross. The solution was not another weapon. It was a builder.
An army stood on a beach looking at a hundred yojanas of open sea. The person who solved it was not a warrior.
Sita was on Lanka. Hanuman had crossed by leaping, which nobody else could do. The army could not.
There was no fleet. There was no crossing. There was an ocean.
And on the far side of it, a fortified island. Held by a power that had beaten everyone who had tried it.
Rama's first move was diplomatic and it failed for three days: he sat on the shore fasting, formally petitioning Sagara, the ocean, for passage. Nothing came of it. He eventually lost patience and took up his bow to dry the sea out entirely, at which point the ocean appeared and offered a compromise.
Sagara said he could not simply part. It was not in his nature to stop being what he was.
But that there was a man in Rama's own army who could build across him.
