The Great Arguments

He Stopped in the Middle and Never Went Back

His father's instruction was that the boy have no contact with any Indian influence whatsoever.

Aurobindo was the most dangerous revolutionary in Bengal, and then he stopped, completely, in the middle, and never went back.

The Englishman

Aurobindo Ghose was born in Calcutta in 1872, into a Bengali Kayastha family.

And his father had a theory. That India was finished. And that the only future for his sons was a European one.

So at seven he was sent to England, and the instruction was that he was to have no contact with Indian influence of any kind. He went to Manchester Grammar School, then St Paul's in London, then King's College, Cambridge.

He became fluent in something like twelve languages. Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian, Spanish.
