On Karva Chauth, wives pray for their husbands' long lives. The Mahabharata remembers a husband who gave half of his own life for his wife.
The girl by the river
Long ago, the Gandharva king Vishvavasu and the apsara Menaka had a daughter, and they left her as a newborn on the bank of a river near the hermitage of the sage Sthulakesha. The sage found her, took her in and raised her as his own. He named her Pramadvara, and she grew up to be the loveliest girl anyone in the forest had ever seen.
