True Valor

Four Limbs of an Army

Every chess piece on every board in the world is a translation of a Sanskrit word, and the Russians kept the original.

Say checkmate and you are speaking Persian. Say rook and you are speaking Sanskrit, badly.

Chaturanga

The game begins in Gupta India, by about the sixth century, and its name tells you what it is.

Chaturanga means the four limbs. Chatur, four; anga, limb.

It is the standard Sanskrit term for an army. An Indian army had four divisions.
