True Valor
Sugar. Sucre. Zucker. Azúcar. Sukkar. Shakar. They are all one Sanskrit word for gravel.
Sugar. Sucre. Zucker. Azúcar. Zucchero. Suiker. Cukier. Sakhar.
Every one of those is the same word, and the word is Sanskrit.
शर्करा, sharkara, originally meant grit or gravel.
It was applied to sugar because that is what crystallised sugar looks like. Small hard grains.
The route out is traceable at every step. Sanskrit sharkara → Persian shakar → Arabic sukkar → Medieval Latin succarum → Old French sucre → English sugar.
And it is not the only one. Sanskrit khanda, a piece or lump, is the ancestor of English candy, by way of Arabic qand. The rock sugar of the Indian texts is the etymological grandfather of a sweet shop.
