True Valor

Eleven Years Before the Mutiny

They left his body on the gibbet for months afterwards. You do not do that because you have caught a bandit.

On 10 June 1846, a body of men attacked the Company treasury at Koilkuntla in the Kurnool country and took what was in it. The rising that followed involved something like five thousand peasants across the Rayalaseema.

And it was led by a man whose family had been dispossessed by a change in the revenue system.

His name was Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, and this was eleven years before 1857.

What it was actually about

It is important to be exact, because it was not primarily about sovereignty or religion. It was about land and money.

The Company had been remaking the agrarian settlement of south India for decades. The poligars were being dismantled.

They were the local military chieftains who had held land in return for keeping order, an arrangement that predated the Company by centuries.

Their forces were disbanded. Their rights were extinguished. Their holdings were converted or resumed. Under the ryotwari system that replaced the old arrangement, revenue was assessed directly on the cultivator, and collected in cash.
