Eight Powers and Nine Treasures, Given Away Rather Than Kept

Sita gave him eight powers and nine treasures, and he has never kept one of them.

The line

The Hanuman Chalisa is forty verses long. One line in it has been unpacked by devotional tradition ever since Tulsidas wrote it in the sixteenth century.

Ashta Siddhi Nav Nidhi Ke Data, As Var Deen Janaki Mata.

It calls Hanuman the giver of eight siddhis and nine nidhis. And it says where he got them, Sita gave them to him. Janaki, in the verse. In gratitude for what he had done for her.
