The Great Epics
She rises from fire, and spends the epic asking people why they think they are allowed to decide her fate.
She was not born to be anyone's daughter. She was produced, out of a fire, by a king who wanted a weapon.
Drupada, king of Panchala, had been humiliated by Drona.
Dragged into his presence in chains, by the Kuru princes. Stripped of half his kingdom.
And told they could now be friends, since they were equals.
He wanted a son who would kill Drona, and no son he had could do it. So he went looking for brahmins who could produce one. And he found two. Yaja and Upayaja.
And he had them perform a sacrifice for that single purpose.
Out of the fire came a young man, grown, armoured, holding a bow, Dhrishtadyumna, made for one killing, which he eventually performed.
