The Great Epics
Arjuna married a woman who was not leaving her kingdom behind. She was its heir.
Chitrangada's father had no son. So under the law of his people he made his daughter into one.
And any man who married her had to accept that her child would never be his.
Chitravahana, king of Manipura, had one child, and she was a daughter.
The dynasty had a specific problem attached to that. The accounts say a boon in his line had promised each king a single heir, and for generations that heir had been a son. With Chitravahana it was Chitrangada, and there would be no other.
So he used an existing legal instrument. He declared her a putrika.
