The Great Epics

Ashwatthama and the Last Weapon

The war was already over. Revenge kept fighting anyway.

The war was over. Eleven men were left alive out of eighteen armies. One of them went back in the dark to finish it.

How he got there

Drona was killed on the fifteenth day, and the manner of it is the reason for everything that follows.

He could not be beaten while he held his bow, so Krishna proposed a lie. An elephant named Ashwatthama was killed.

And Yudhishthira, who had never told one, was made to announce that Ashwatthama was dead.

He added the elephant. In a voice deliberately drowned out.

Drona believed his son was dead, put down his weapons, and sat in meditation on the floor of his chariot. Dhrishtadyumna, Drupada's son, born from a fire for exactly this, beheaded him where he sat.

Ashwatthama, alive, found out how his father had died.
